If Facebook were around in 1996, would it help or hinder Emma's problems, in regards to her friendships, relationships, and crushes? Josh's problems? Explain your answers.
I don't think it would change their lives a huge amount, but it maybe would keep them updated on each others lives while they aren't talking to each other. For example, if Emma was going to some party, Josh could creep along and take some hottie to make her jealous. (Right, because that always works!) I think that maybe Josh would've saved himself the embarrassment of trying to kiss Emma if he'd seen a status that said "So happy right now, love being single", for instance. In my life though, Facebook does not radically influence the relationships I have, it just keeps me connected.
I think it would do more harm then it would good for both Emma and Josh's relationships. Emma is socially awkward and blurts things out when she is in person, if you took away that human interaction I think she would just type without thinking or reading it over. She would probably hurt a lot of people's feeling unintentionally. While Josh might be able to talk to Sydney through a computer screen, he may misinterpret her messages or posts and do something to ruin that relationship.
I think it would do a little of both because Facebook is a social network where everyone is your friend on the website so you see how different people view different subjects/ aspects of there lives and because Emma is going through a confusing time she may receive the help she needs from Facebook or she may see something that she may not like. For example, she may see her crush flirting with someone else and become in interested or she may see her boyfriend flirting with another person and dump him faster. Either way, it could go both ways. Facebook would help her social skills much better and improve how she gets her point across to others. As of her and Josh I feel if they were behind a computer screen then they would be less shy and more open.
I think if Facebook was around in 1996, it could have helped Emma and Josh's problems a little bit because many people find it harder to say certain things to others in person than it would be to say it through text message. For example, people would feel more comfortable expressing themselves through messages rather than saying it face to face because they might not have enough courage to say what they want or even might be too shy to approach the other person. But it could also be something bad because some people could read and receive a message the wrong way if not sent explained clearly. In the book Emma is the type to say anything in her mind before thinking it through so she might do the same thing in messages, but to me it would give her time to think and be more comfortable because she gets nervous around people like Cody. Also, Josh will be more comfortable because he could talk to Sydney through the computer. So, at the end i think its good for somethings and bad if people get the wrong impression.
